Project Overview

Wallasea Island Project RSPB

QPI designed and supplied an 800m conveyor system at Wallasea Island, complete with belting, to transport excavated material within the site as part of one of Europe’s largest new wetland nature reserve projects.

The conveyor system stretches from the newly constructed jetty to a holding point for the excavated material, from which the material is distributed around the site by truck. QPI supplied all conveyor rollers, drums, conveyor belt, vulcanising, structure and covers for the system.

The jetty can accommodate two 90 metre, 2,500 tonne ships simultaneously. At peak times, two unloading machines per pontoon are capable of servicing four ships and unloading up to 10,000 tonnes of material over a 24-hour period.

Excavated material sustainably transported from London is unloaded directly from the ship onto the conveyor system. To accommodate tidal movements of up to six metres, the conveyor includes a flexible section on the pontoon connecting to a fixed shore section.

The RSPB nature reserve will provide one of the largest new wetland habitats in Europe, creating an environment tailored for fish, reptiles, insects, mammals and birds, while also acting as a tourist attraction and recreational resource for local people.
